Setup and placement

Fill it, plug it in, done. No plumbing and nothing to bury. It sits directly on the ground.

Set it level. A tilted hollow pools the water at one end and leaves the other dry, which is visible on a shallow interior pool.

Where a horizontal piece works

The front edge of a border, the base of a wall, beside a step, under a window, along a path. Anywhere you want water without an upright object in the way. It also works partly tucked into planting, since the form reads as something that fell there.

Water level and daily care

Keep enough water in the hollow to cover the pump so it never runs dry. A shallow open pool at ground level evaporates quickly and collects debris faster than a raised design, so check every few days.

Clear leaves and soil from the pool. At ground level it will collect more than a raised fountain does, particularly in autumn.

Looking after the painted finish

The bark and the birds are painted resin. Years of unbroken sun will lift some depth out of the colour. Clean with a soft cloth and keep harsh liquid cleaners off, particularly around the birds where the detail is finest. Sitting at ground level it will also pick up soil splash, which wipes off.

Winter storage

Before hard freezes, drain the hollow completely, disconnect and store the pump indoors, and dry the piece out. An open pool collects rain and snow all winter, so cover it or bring it inside once drained.

Is it safe around children and pets?

It sits on the ground and cannot topple, which makes it one of the safer designs here. The open pool is at ground level and within easy reach, so animals will drink from it and small children can reach in. Run the cord where it will not catch a foot. The recirculating water is not intended for drinking.
