Grain That Goes Around the Knots
The basin is carved as a single section of old timber. The grain reaches a knot, parts, passes it, and closes again. That is how wood actually grows.
Faux timber almost always uses parallel lines, and you can spot the mould from across the garden. Every run on this one goes a different way, so it holds up when you crouch down to look.
A knot hollow sits partway up the column, pale at the edge and dark inside. A small black and white bird perches on a burl below it. The column is deep brown bark and the basin is grey buff heartwood, because a tree cut open is two colours.
What Makes This Bird Bath Different
- Grain that parts around the knots. Real timber grain splits at a knot and closes after it, and this basin does the same in several places, each one running differently. Repeating parallel lines are what give moulded wood effect away within seconds.
- An uneven rim, which is what wet feet need. The edge is a broken timber line rather than a true circle. Birds land on the rim and assess before stepping in, and a smooth stone edge is slick once it is wet.
- Fill to two inches, not to the brim. At that depth it reads as rainwater collected in a fallen log. Chickadees sip from the edge, thrushes get right in, squirrels come to drink. Filled to the top it becomes a drinking stop.
- Dark column, pale basin. Bark and heartwood are different colours on a real cut tree. A single flat tone is the first thing that gives a wood effect piece away.
This one imitates nature, so it needs green around it to work. A planted border, under a tree, among ferns and shade planting. On bare paving it reads as an object rather than as part of the garden. Turn the knot and the perched bird toward where people pass. From the back it is a plain column.
Filling it
Two inches is the number. Birds wade rather than swim. Shallow water also warms faster in spring, which brings them back sooner.
Keeping the texture sharp
A soft brush every couple of weeks keeps the grain and the knot recess clear. Plain water is enough, and the two tone finish hides general marks well.
Winter
Drain the basin before the first hard frost and leave it empty or turned over. Check the knot recess is clear of water when you drain it.

Is the wood real?
Concrete cast from a timber original, which is why the grain runs correctly around the knots. Real wood in constant contact with water splits within a few seasons. This holds the texture indefinitely.
Where does it look right?
Woodland and informal gardens, a planted border, among ferns. It reads as a cut stump, so it wants green around it rather than paving.
Will birds actually use it?
The uneven timber rim gives better grip than a smooth stone edge, which matters once feet are wet. Fill to two inches, keep the approach open, and have cover within a short flight.
Is the bird part of the casting?
Yes, cast into the burl rather than added on. It cannot be knocked off and it does not need its own fixing.
