Set it level. Uneven ground sends the water down one edge of a face instead of across it, and on a ribbed surface that shows as a dry patch.
Choosing the background

Water level and daily care
Keep enough water in the base to cover the pump so it never runs dry. Water spread thin across three ribbed faces evaporates faster than a contained stream, so check every few days in warm weather.

Cleaning the ribbed faces
In hard water areas mineral film settles into the fine horizontal bands, which is the hardest place to remove it once set. Wipe the faces regularly rather than waiting, and keep abrasives away from the scoring.
Winter storage

Why does top lighting matter?
Because light entering at the top travels down through the descending water and lights the whole face. Base lighting only reaches the last few inches, which is why most lit water walls are dark above and bright at the foot. This is the opposite arrangement and it looks quite different after dark.
What background does it need?
A pale one. The slate is dark grey green, so it reads as three distinct columns against render, a light fence, or a white wall. Against a dark hedge the staggered silhouette disappears and it becomes one mass.
Is it quiet?
Yes, among the quieter pieces here. The ribbed faces hold the water in contact for the entire descent so nothing falls clear. If you want an audible fountain, choose a design where the water leaves the surface.
Is it safe around children and pets?
